The Irish Surfing Association has announced the Irish Junior Surf Team to compete at the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship taking place at Punta Hermosa, Peru from the 21 to 29 May. The team will join over forty surfing nations from around the World for this prestigious surfing event.
A team of eleven surfers and three management will represent Ireland at the event. Conor Maguire, Cian Cagney and Cian Logue will fly the flag for Ireland in the U18 Boys division along with new cap, Louis Martin. The U18 Girls division will include three new caps, Emer Mc Hugh, Meadb Mc Closkey and Aideen Hillery. Gearoid Mc Daid will lead the charge in the U16 Boys accompanied by three new caps, Donough Cronin, David Gaynor and Neil Murphy. The team will be led by manager, Zoë Lally and coaches Pascal Devine and Ashleigh Smith.
The team is due to depart Dublin airport on Tuesday 17th May. Once in Peru the surfers will have a number of days training prior to the contest to acclimatise to the surf and weather conditions. The Championships will start on Saturday 21st May with the opening ceremony and parade of nations. Heats will commence on Sunday 22nd May running all week with the grand finals on Sunday 29th.
Irish brand Emerald Surfwear, established in 2009 and recently opened shops in Lahinch and Temple Bar, have come on board as team kit sponsor. “We are delighted to get involved with the ISA in the grass roots of Irish Surfing.
